Two Students Make a Difference for the Holidays in Haiti and D.C.
From the mountainous region of Haiti to the suburbs of Washington, D.C., Spelman students will be immersed in volunteer projects during the December winter break. AmberLace Moore, C’2013, a native of Bowie, Md., got an early jump on her holiday volunteer efforts when she collected food donations from her Spelman sisters before the Thanksgiving break to go toward A Bottle of Change. ‘Tradition,’ Celebrating Musical Works From Years Past
It’s a Tuesday evening in mid-November, and from the parking lot of the Rockefeller Fine Arts Building you can hear the powerful and reverberating voices of the combined Spelman and Morehouse glee clubs. They are rehearsing for the Dec. 2-4 85th Annual Spelman-Morehouse Christmas Carol Concert. “Welcome Yule,” the collective voices ring. “Welcome be ye,” they shout. All under the tutelage tonight of Dr. Kevin Johnson, director of the Spelman College Glee Club and associate professor and chair of music, the assembly of vocal performers are ready for the yearly tradition. In years past, there has been a little infusion of new ...

Currently wowing local audiences and fans alike with their infectious new songs, “MillionAir” and “Cupid,” Zayani and her band mates intend to take SolStar to even greater heights. “Our music is always from the ...
Professor Uses Art to Promote Cultural Diplomacy
In an effort to build bridges of global understanding, each summer, art professor Arturo Lindsay travels with Spelman students to an artist colony in Portobelo, Panama. One of 15 elite artists selected by the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, Lindsay will once again leverage his artistic talents to promote diplomacy during a trip to Cairo, Egypt, scheduled in January as part of the new smARTpower. Part of Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton's new strategic approach to diplomacy, which she dubbed “smart power,” the program will send the smARTPower 15 and collaborative artist teams to 15 ...
