SSGA Gives Back With More Than $30,000 in Awards
The Spelman Student Government Association is helping students in two areas that matter most – books and meals. Dedicated to helping meet students' financial needs, SSGA has disbursed more than $30,000 in awards to Spelman students since the beginning of the 2009-2010 academic year. To date, eight students have received the True Blue Book Award, valued at $250 each. A merit-based scholarship, students are required to submit an essay detailing their campus involvement and why they are seeking the award. Family Weekend Connects Relatives to the Spelman Community
Lacey Reddix, C’2010, and her father Dr. Carl Reddix made their rounds on Spelman College during Family Weekend Feb. 19 and 20. The annual experience allows families to engage in their daughters’ daily lives at the College. The weekend also fosters connections with the Spelman community through art, athletics, music, theater and service events. Reddix and her father attended the first major event of the weekend, “Taking Steps to Shape Your Life,” a panel sponsored by Kroger in partnership with The Coca-Cola Co. Jasmine Guy Directs ‘The Bluest Eye’ at Spelman
“The better memories of my life rose when I came to Spelman,” says actress Jasmine Guy who returns to the Baldwin Burroughs Theatre stage to direct the Spelman College department of drama and dance’s production of “The Bluest Eye” April 1-4. Thirty-five years earlier Ms. Guy, best known for her role as Whitley Gilbert on the TV series “A Different World,” danced her way across the same stage for Spelman’s dance school. Spelman Directs Investments Through New Endowment Management Office
Spelman’s newest office is taking the lead in the College’s financial goals. Launched in September of 2009, the Office of Endowment Management is responsible for managing the institution’s $300 million endowment and directing its investment strategy. Previously, the task of producing long-term investment results to support the education and research goals of the College had been the full responsibility of the Investment Committee of the board of trustees. “Our endowment is rebounding with the slowly returning economy, and we feel it’s a good time to have a dedicated team to steer our investments,” said Danny Flanigan, Spelman’s vice president for Business ...
