The Spelman College faculty and staff raised a record-breaking $20,663 in pledges for the 2009 United Way campaign, surpassing last year’s total of $18,725 by more than 10 percent. The College also participated in “”Live United,” the first Atlanta University Center United Way campaign on Nov. 3, which included a block party where more than $17,000 was received in pledges and donations. (Editors Note: As of Nov. 13, pledges and donations to AUC United Way had reached more than $50,000.)

“Traditionally, each AUC institution conducts its own United Way campaign each year,” said Spelman associate professor of psychology, Sandra Sims Patterson, who co-chaired the Spelman campaign with Harold Bell, Spelman’s director of career planning and development. “This combined AUC campaign demonstrates strength in unity.  It was a great opportunity this year to really “Live United” to make a greater impact on the lives of children, families and individuals in our Atlanta communities.”

The AUC campaign seeks to raise between $55,000 and $100,000. The kick off included games, music, breakfast for AUC employees and students who made pledges or donations to United Way, and attendance by the presidents of Spelman, Morehouse, Morehouse School of Medicine, and Clark Atlanta University, Milton Little, President of United Way of Metropolitan Atlanta, and Brian Jordan, MSM trustee and former player for the Atlanta Falcons and the Atlanta Braves.

“Witnessing the unity of the AUC Presidents, faculty, and United Way of Metropolitan Atlanta inspires me to serve others through my leadership skills,” said Catheryn Cross, C’2010, president of Student United Way at Spelman. “This event was much more than a mere fundraiser. The AUC United Way block party signified that in the wake of many disappointments this year for the AUC community, there are many more that suffer despair, hunger, and homelessness daily. By unifying and raising funds for the less fortunate, the AUC exemplified together what true service is.” — Joyce E. Davis
