Dr. Sylvia BozemanTo get a glimpse of the impact of Sylvia Bozeman, Ph.D., on women and mathematics education, take a look around her office. Lining the window sill and walls are appreciation awards, thank you cards, and several photos of students enrolled in the Enhancing Diversity in Graduation Education program, which she co-founded in 1998. A professor of mathematics since 1974, Dr. Bozeman has committed her career and life’s work to increasing the number of African Americans and women who earn graduate degrees in science and mathematics and who pursue successful careers in these areas.

In September, Dr. Bozeman’s passion for mathematics led to an invitation by the Mathematical Association of America and the Congressional Diversity and Innovation Caucus to Washington, D. C. She attended a congressional briefing addressing the importance of engaging and mentoring students from underrepresented groups to increase capacity in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

During the briefing, she addressed “Undergraduate Mathematics: Promising Recruitment and Retention Strategies to Ensure Diversity in the STEM Pipeline.” Following the briefing, U.S. Rep. Ruben Hinojosa, D-Texas, invited Dr. Bozeman to help identify and formulate proposals to increase the number and quality of research and internship opportunities for large numbers of underrepresented, minority undergraduate students and women.

“There are so many careers that require a good mathematics background, especially in science,” said Dr. Bozeman, who earlier this year received the American Association for the Advancement of Science Mentor award. “African Americans must especially learn math. If not, you end up closing the door to many careers in research, private enterprise, technology and industry.” — Alicia Lurry
