President Hosts Third CEO Roundtable
President Beverly Daniel Tatum hosted the third CEO Roundtable with corporate and alumnae executives and students on May 13, 2010. Co-hosted by John Rice, CEO, General Electric, and David Ratcliffe, CEO, Southern Company, the gathering was organized to explore how corporate leaders can create inclusive workplace environments and leverage talent development. Executives from companies such as John Wieland, Havertys, Cummins and Turner Broadcasting, explored the intersections of race, gender, and the millennial generation, and the opportunities and challenges that these changing demographics have on creating a competitive work force.
DOT Program Includes 13 Graduates
Thirteen participants in Department of Transportation’s inaugural class of the Entrepreneurial Training and Technical Assistance Women and Girls Program have graduated from Spelman College. Four of these graduates will begin working in transportation positions this summer. They will be employed with the Federal Aviation Administration, Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority, and private transportation-related businesses. The program was created to encourage girls to pursue careers in science, engineering and technology, and help women in the field achieve their goals.
Chelsea Williams, C’2012, has been selected as a 2010 GEICO Achievement Award recipient. Williams, an economics major and the secretary of finance for the Spelman College student government association, will receive $1,000 for the award, which recognizes outstanding college sophomores and juniors for academic achievement, leadership and involvement in campus and community activities.
The Winner of the May Test Your Spelman Knowledge Is…
The winner of the May Test Your Spelman Knowledge contest is Robyn Cross, C’2010, a pharmacy technician in Atlanta. Cross correctly identified the original name of Spelman College as Atlanta Baptist Female Seminary, which was changed in 1884 to honor Laura Spelman Rockefeller. She will receive Spelman paraphernalia.
